Torridge District Council Supports National Work Experience Month by Welcoming Students from Bideford College to Explore Future Career Paths

Torridge District Council recently welcomed eight students from Bideford College Sixth Form for a week-long work experience programme. Students spent time across a range of departments which were of interest to them, including Environmental Protection, Northam Burrows, Planning, Economic Development, Customer Services, Legal, and Finance; enabling them to experience different aspects of local governance in action and discover potential career paths they could go down in the future.
Work Experience Student, Hazel, who spent the week with Northam Burrows Rangers said:
''This week has helped me think about my future career choices as it has shown me all the different jobs the rangers do, and I now hope to have a similar role in the future. I have found I really enjoy working outdoors and my favourite part of the week was when we looked at the different insects in the dunes with the different school groups.''
In addition to the week-long work experience programme with Bideford College, the Waste & Recycling team also welcomed North Devon College student Charlie, who needed to complete a set number of work placement hours as part of his course. Charlie successfully completed his required placement hours with the team this month and, following his placement, is due to join the Council as an apprentice in September.
Councillor Ken James, Leader of Torridge District Council said:
"We understand the importance of inspiring the next generation and providing valuable work experience opportunities for young people in our local community. In an ever-challenging employment market, work experience plays a vital role in helping develop practical skills, build confidence, and make informed decisions about their future careers.''
''As a council we are delighted to support Bideford College Sixth Form students and those from North Devon College who are looking to progress through apprenticeships. We are continually impressed by the skills, enthusiasm, and maturity that they bring, and we always look forward to seeing them develop during their week with us - and, in some cases, beyond!''
