Torridge District Council is pleased to announce the return of its Wind, Waves and Water scheme for the 2026 summer season, recognising surf schools and beach activity providers that demonstrate high standards of safety and good practice at Westward Ho! and Northam Burrows.

The voluntary scheme invites organisations operating on the beach to submit information about their activities and operating procedures. This includes documentation such as risk assessments, health and safety policies, and other measures that help ensure safe and responsible delivery of services.

Through the scheme, the Council identifies and endorses operators that meet its requirements and are considered suitable and safe for both residents and visitors to use.

The organisations registered under the Wind, Waves and Water scheme for 2026 include:

  • Skern Adventure
  • Kingsley Surf Academy
  • North Devon Surf School
  • Westward Waves

Up to date information regarding registered operators is available here: Westward Ho! Wind, Waves and Water Scheme | Torridge District Council

Councillor Lyndon Piper, Lead Member for Leisure, Torridge District Council, said:

'The Westward Ho! Wind, Waves and Water scheme was created so that users can be confident that they are choosing, safe and reputable instructors who are professionally accredited. We are fortunate enough to have a fantastic beach like Westward Ho! right on our doorstep, but we must remember the sea can be unpredictable, making water safety vital. No matter the water sport you're taking part in - from swimming and surfing, to paddleboarding and wind sports - being taught and guided by qualified professionals is key. Not only so you receive the best instruction, but also so that you're in safe hands if something was to go wrong.'

Activity providers that are not currently registered can still do so by contacting Torridge District Council via email at [email protected] or calling 01237 479708 to request a form.
