If you have a mental illness or impairment
If you have a mental illness or impairment that is impacting on your ability to manage in your home, you should tell:
- Your GP and/or the Community Mental Health Team if you are working with them.
- You may also ask Devon County Council for a care needs assessment Care and support needs assessments - Adult social care
If you believe that your mental health would be improved by a move to a different home, options may include:
- Renting another home privately. You will need to have saved money for a deposit and rent in advance but the Council may be able to help with this if you are already renting and receiving help to pay your rent. You can look for private rented housing via letting agents and websites, such as: Properties to rent in the UK | Flats and Houses to Rent | Rightmove
- You can apply for social housing with a Registered Provider, which is cheaper than renting privately. To apply for social housing, you will need to register on Devon Home Choice and you will need to bid for suitable homes. However, most people who apply to Devon Home Choice are not offered a home because demand is too high. Providing evidence from relevant health professionals to show how your mental health would be improved by moving home may give you greater priority. You will need to have saved money for rent in advance.
