Bideford is reinstated with 'Coach Friendly' destination accreditation

Torridge District Council is pleased to announce that Bideford has been awarded CPT Coach Friendly Status - a nationally recognised accreditation which highlights the town's commitment to welcoming coach visitors and supporting sustainable transport and tourism.
With support from The Burton, the Council completed and submitted an application to the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) in February 2026. An inspection visit took place on 7 May when CPT Coaching Manager, Andy Shaw, visited Bideford to tour the town's coach facilities and meet TDC Economic Development Officer and representatives at The Burton.
The accreditation recognises destinations that provide suitable facilities, access and information for coach operators and passengers, helping to encourage more organised group visits and tourism activity. According to the CPT, becoming accredited as 'Coach Friendly' demonstrates a commitment to increasing coach visits, boosting footfall and generating additional income for local shops, cafés and other businesses.
The award is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Bideford by increasing visitor numbers and encouraging longer stays within the town. Coach tourism plays an important role in supporting local economies across the UK, with CPT research showing that coach visitors contribute to billions of pounds annually to tourism destinations nationwide.
This success reflects the strong partnership between The Burton at Bideford and Torridge District Council and demonstrates the shared commitment to promote Bideford as a welcoming, accessible and thriving destination for visitors.
Councillor Bob Hicks, Lead Member for Economy & Estates, Torridge District Council, said:
''I am delighted that Bideford has received CPT Coach Friendly Status - this is great news for the town and the surrounding area. This accreditation should help boost the local economy, whilst also promoting Bideford as an accessible location. We look forward and are excited to welcome many new visitors to the area as a result."
