8-Year-Old George Hudson Sees Winning Design Showcased on New Refuse Vehicle

8-year-old George Hudson, from Bideford, was recently invited to Torridge District Council's new Operational Services Centre after winning a competition to design a new banner for one of the council's latest refuse vehicles.
Before George's artwork was transformed into a large-scale banner and applied to the side of the new vehicle, he spent time with Graphic Designer Jon Lockett to develop and refine his ideas. Together, they adapted the design to ensure it would work effectively at full size and help promote positive recycling habits as the lorry travels across the district.
During the visit, he saw his finished design proudly displayed on the new truck and was presented with a gift to celebrate his achievement and thank him for his contribution. As part of his prize, George was also given a behind‑the‑scenes tour of the Centre, visiting the workshop and the wash area where the lorries are cleaned after a day on the country roads.
The newly branded vehicle can now be seen on rounds in the district and residents are encouraged to look out for George's design as it makes its way through towns and villages across Torridge.
George Hudson, winner of the competition, said:
"It was very exciting to see my design on the side of the truck - I didn't realise it would be so big and on both sides. I'm very happy with it. I really enjoyed having a look around the centre and learning about where my lorry will go. Getting to sit in the lorry was definitely the best bit."
Councillor Chris Leather, Lead Member for Waste and Recycling at Torridge District Council, said:
"It's wonderful to see young people engaging so positively with recycling, and George's artwork will help spread that message across our community. I'd like to thank George for his creativity, as well as our dedicated crews, whose hard work continues to support a cleaner, greener Torridge. Keep an eye out for George's design when our teams are out collecting your waste!"
