Torridge Celebrates Maritime Milestone as 10th Animal Feed Cargo Ship Docks at Appledore

Torridge is marking a major milestone, as the RDJ Waalstroom became the 10th cargo ship loaded with animal feed cargo to dock at New Quay, Appledore. The ship arrived carrying just under 3,000 tonnes of animal feed, destined for agricultural suppliers across the South West.
So far, the cargo ships docking at Appledore has removed over 1,100 lorry journeys from regional roads, the equivalent to more than 300,000 road miles.
The environmental benefits are matched by operational efficiency. The RDJ Waalstroom was unloaded at a rate of 150 tonnes per hour, allowing the entire cargo to be transferred to ground transport in under 48 hours. This rapid turnaround ensures minimal disruption and maximum productivity.
The ship's safe arrival was overseen by Paul Brown, Torridge District Council's experienced maritime pilot. As the Competent Harbour Authority for the Taw and Torridge Estuary, the Port of Bideford ensures all vessels are guided safely through the estuary's tidal waters.
This marks a significant step in Torridge District Council's vision to re-establish the River Torridge as a key gateway for shipping. The initiative is the result of a strategic collaboration
between Torridge District Council, Navantia UK, and Mole Valley Farmers, aimed at reducing road congestion, lowering carbon emissions and revitalising local port infrastructure.
Councillor Bob Hicks, Lead Member for Economy & Estates, commented;
"We are thrilled to see Appledore once again playing a vital role in regional trade. The return of cargo ships is not only a win for the environment, but also a boost for the local economy. It supports jobs, strengthens supply chains and brings a sense of pride to our coastal communities. Let's hope they keep coming."
Navantia UK, commented;
"Navantia UK is proud to celebrate in the key milestone event of ships 10 and 11 as part of a strategic partnership with Torridge District Council and Mole Valley Farmers, delivering bulk animal feed to the New Quay facility at Appledore.
"The latest arrival, the RDJ Waalstroom, brought nearly 3000 tonnes of essential agricultural feed to the Southwest, reinforcing the region's supply chain while significantly reducing environmental impact.
"This initiative is part of Navantia UK's broader commitment to supporting sustainable maritime logistics and revitalising regional port infrastructure. By reactivating Appledore's
commercial capabilities, the partnership is helping to reduce carbon emissions, ease road congestion, and create new economic opportunities for North Devon."
Laura Correa Mendioroz, General Manager of Navantia UK Appledore, commented:
"These successful shipments are a testament to what can be achieved through strategic collaboration and a shared vision for sustainable growth. We are proud to support Torridge District Council in re-establishing Appledore as a vital maritime hub, and we look forward to continuing our work to deliver greener, more efficient logistics solutions for the UK.
"Navantia UK remains committed to investing in the UK's maritime future, combining global expertise with local partnerships to deliver long-term value for communities, industry, and the environment."
