Purchasing a grave

The exclusive rights of burial for a full grave or cremation grave for a 25 year period. It is important to note that the right to bury in a grave is purchased and not the land itself, which remains in the ownership of the council.

At the end of the 25 year period, the lease maybe renewed for a further period.  If it is not extended the rights to the grave revert back to Torridge District Council.

In purchasing the grave the following benefits are gained:

The grave may not be opened/re-opened for a burial or interment of ashes without your permission.

Members of a family can be buried together (subject to sufficient space being available)

A memorial may be fixed on the grave and altered or added to only with your permission.

Purchases can take place through your chosen funeral director or by contacting our Cemetery Service either by telephone 01237 424244 or by email cemeteries@torridge.gov.uk

For please refer to our Cemetery Fees Webpage for costs.

Unpurchased graves

Unpurchased graves represent the least expensive burial option - all you pay for is the burial.

However, the grave itself remains the property of the council and we may use it to bury other people who want an unpurchased grave.

Please note you will not be allowed to place a memorial on an unpurchased grave and you should not expect to be able to bury another relative in the same grave.
