Temporary accommodation

Temporary accommodation

If you are homeless the council may offer you temporary accommodation, but this will depend on your circumstances.  We are not legally required to provide emergency accommodation to everyone.

We use different types of temporary accommodation, including:

  • hostels with some shared facilities

  • housing that we own or lease to use as short term emergency accommodation

  • refuge (if you are fleeing domestic abuse)

We sometimes use bed and breakfast accommodation and holiday lets but we are reducing our use of this type of accommodation because it is expensive for the council and people must often move from one place to another.

It is likely you will need to pay for your temporary accommodation, but the accommodation we provide must be affordable and if you are on low income, you may be able to apply for help through housing benefit.

We usually try and find accommodation in our area, but may offer accommodation in another area if there is no suitable accommodation in Torridge.

You  must follow the rules for your accommodation, or you may be asked to leave.

You may have to stay in temporary accommodation for months or even years.
