Torridge District Councillors have voted to allocate the Winsford development sports pitches to Bideford AFC Youth.

Bideford AFC Youth is a Football Association accredited club and the largest youth football club in Torridge.  It provides structured football opportunities for over 400 playing members and 40 adult volunteers across 20 teams, engaging with around 1,500 people in the local community.

Since its formation in 2011, and despite its success, the club has faced a significant challenge with the lack of a dedicated facility.  This new announcement means that not only will the club now have its own dedicated grounds, but additional funding will also be available to develop the site facilities such as a community hall and changing rooms.

Councillor Lyndon Piper, Lead Member for Leisure - Torridge District Council, said:

"This is fantastic news for the club and the local community at large.  A home base will help strengthen community ties, provide improved training conditions as well as provide a facility that could be used for other sports, social events, and activities, benefitting the wider community beyond just football."

Dan Summers, Vice Chairman of Bideford Youth AFC, said:

"We are extremely grateful to receive these new sports pitches, which will help to put an end to some of the logistical and financial challenges that we have faced over the years.  A permanent home will not only help us in our quest for continued growth but improve accessibility for young players and assist with volunteer retention and recruitment.  We are looking forward to exciting times ahead!"
