On Friday 15 August, Councillors and Officers at Torridge District Council gathered to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day by raising the Flag of Celebration at the Riverbank House flagpole in Bideford.  The Chair of Torridge District Council, Councillor Doug Bushby, presided over the event and led a two-minute silence to honour those who volunteered, sacrificed, fought and died for our freedom.

Councillor Doug Bushby, Chair of Torridge District Council, commented:

"Today's flag-raising ceremony provides an opportunity for Officers and Councillors to unite in commemorating this significant anniversary.

Today, we unite to celebrate and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for peace and remember with an unwavering and heartfelt gratitude, the service and sacrifice of the wartime generation who made that hard-fought victory possible.  We acknowledge their courage and the lasting impact they have made on our lives.

That debt can never truly be repaid; but we can, and we will, remember them."
