Construction begins on new Wilkey's Field Car Park in Westward Ho!

Wilkeys Field Construction

Construction of a new Car Park in Westward Ho! has now begun following the transfer of the land at Wilkey's Field from Chichester Homes under a section 106 planning agreement. The Car Park is being built to provide extra spaces for the popular Westward Ho! resort area and alleviate some of the congestion currently experienced during the busy summer months.

In total 159 spaces will be created with 36 of these open all year round and 123 that will only be used during the summer months. 8 Disabled bays will be created as part of the scheme as well as 2 electric charging points and a small number of private bays. Gates to the car park will be operated on the same timings as the gates to the Burrows Country Park, which is intended to reduce the risk of out of hours anti-social behaviour.

Preparation of the site has been completed by Chichester Homes with other works by BT and Western Power also completed. The works to build the car park are being managed by Devon County Council Engineering Services on behalf of Torridge, with Chichester Homes completing the final surfacing works and traffic restrictions to the main Pebbleridge Road. The build is expected to be completed by the end of June.

Torridge District Councils Property and Procurement Manager - Adrian Redwood said:

"We recognise that the works will inevitably involve some congestion locally, but the activities will be sequenced to keep this to a minimum. We have written to local residents that may be affected and where necessary made alternative parking arrangements available for the short periods while work is undertaken near any of their properties.

The intention is to have all of the works completed before the main summer holiday period, so that the parking will be available during the busy summer months. The indication from our consultations is that the additional parking capacity will be welcomed by many residents and the businesses that operate nearby. We would like to thank everyone for their patience during the construction period."
