Priority Need Definition

You will be considered to be in priority need if you are:

  • a family and there are dependent children aged under 16 in your household (or under 19 if still dependent on you)

  • pregnant

  • a care leaver aged 18-20

  • aged 16 or 17

  • homeless due to a fire, flood or other disaster

  • considered to be 'vulnerable,' You may be 'vulnerable' if, for example, you have a disability or a serious health condition, or are at risk of domestic abuse and this would make it difficult for you to cope when homeless; putting you at greater risk of harm than an 'ordinary person' if they were homeless

If you are aged 16 or 17 it is likely that Social Services will be responsible for ensuring that you have a safe place to live, although the Council may assist you and provide you with emergency housing.
