What is a Local Plan?

A Local Plan is a document prepared by the local planning authority to:

  • set out the spatial vision for development for the next 15-20 years across the district;
  • allocate enough housing and employment land as well as traveller pitches, to meet all future needs;
  • establish the framework for decision making on planning applications by setting out the policies that will guide most forms of development;
  • plan for the necessary physical and community infrastructure to support the planned for development - via an associated Infrastructure Delivery Plan; and
  • protect the most important habitats, landscapes and townscapes of the area.
