What is a Listed Building?

A listed building is a building/structure or special monument of special architectural or historic interest which is included in a schedule compiled by the Secretary of State for the Environment.

Which buildings are Listed?

Generally, four groups of buildings are eligible for listing.

How are buildings classified?

There are three main classifications for Listed Buildings.

What does the Listing mean?

If a building is listed, then the WHOLE BUILDING is listed - both its exterior and interior.

Listed Building Consent

Any works likely to affect the character or appearance of the listed building (this would normally include works to demolish, alter or extend a listed building) MUST obtain 'Listed Building Consent' from the Local Planning Authority.
