Bideford and Appledore Conservation Area Appraisals

The Bideford Conservation Area Appraisal follows a review of the Conservation Area boundary undertaken in late 2008-early 2009 and Appledore's undertaken in 2003.

Conservation areas are 'areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance' (69(1)(a) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990).

Local planning authorities are required to designate conservation areas, to keep them under review, and, if appropriate to designate further areas (Section 69(2)).

These Appraisals should be seen as the first step in a dynamic process, the aim of which is to preserve and enhance the character and appearance of the Bideford and Appledore Conservation Areas. Just as conservation area designation should not be seen as an end in itself, neither should the preparation of a conservation area appraisal.

The guidance in these documents will assist in the application of development plan policies and provide a sound, defensible basis for development control and other decisions.
