Designated Public Places order
A Designated Public Places order (DPPO), which will control the consumption of alcohol in public places in specified areas, has been introduced by Torridge District Council, effective from 21st June 2010.
The Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 allows the Council to make orders which restrict public drinking in certain places, these orders are know as Designated Public Place Orders (DDPO), and apply to areas where alcohol related anti social behaviour causes problems. Alcohol consumption within the area is only restricted and not excluded, unless requested by a Police Officer or Police Community Support Officer.
Where is the area?
The designated area covers:
- Victoria Park
- King George V Playing Fields
- The Quay car park
- Landivisiau Walk
A map of the area can be obtained from Torridge District Council Legal Department.
Are there any exclusions?
The following areas are excluded from the order:
- The Bowling Club
- The Rugby Club
- The Former Tourist Information Centre
- The Burton Arts Centre
How does the order work?
It is not a criminal offence to consume alcohol within the designated area. However an offence is committed if a person refuses to comply with a Police Officer or Police Community Support Officer's request to refrain from drinking in the area
The Police have the power to seize the alcohol, failure to so can result in arrest.
