Food and Health & Safety

The Food and Safety Team is part of the Council's Environmental Health Service. We work alongside the Environmental Protection and Licensing Teams from offices in Bridge Buildings, Bideford. We undertake official food safety controls in the District and enforce health & safety in the workplace at certain premises including retail, wholesale and leisure businesses. We are a statutory service and work in close partnership with national enforcement agencies such as the Food Standards Agency, Health & Safety Executive and the Public Health England. Team Members: Daryl Littlejohns (Food and Safety Manager), Julie Mann (Environmental Health Officer), Chris Parkhouse - (Health & Safety Specialist), Pat Stark and Heather Grills (Support Assistants).

If you are based in the Torridge District and want to sell or offer food to the public, you need to register with us on the prescribed form, registration is free. Food handlers must have food hygiene training and you need to have documented food safety management procedures. We recommend you download a free copy of 'safer food better business' from the link below. We can post a copy of the pack at a charge of £6.50 which covers administration, printing and postage costs. Contact us on 01237 428809. Once we have received your application for registration an environmental health officer will contact or visit you to discuss your food safety controls and provide advise and support. We recommend you retain a stamped copy of your registration and ensure all the above are in place prior to a food hygiene rating inspection. Please read 'Food Hygiene a Guide for Business' below.

On this site we have included PDF downloads of relevent legisation, up to date amendments can be found at legislation.gov.uk and EU Food Legislation.

OUR OTHER WEB PAGES:

  • The Food & Safety team can help with a wide range of subjects regards food poisoning, food complaints, food hygiene training, health and safety at work issues and registration or approval of food premises.

  • 581 food handlers have trained on our course. The law requires that food business operators must ensure food handlers are supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters commensurate with their work activity. Those responsible for the development and maintenance of documented food safety procedures referred to in Article 5(1) of the Regulation EC 852/2004 or for the operation of relevant guides must receive adequate training in the application of HACCP principles.

  • If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). The FSA issues information about product withdrawals and recalls to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food. This page also brings you other national and local food safety updates.

  • Here you will find information on: Registering your food establishment or obtaining product specific approval, Food Hygiene Rating Scheme Guidance on the food Regulations, Food inspections, Food safety management, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) Food hygiene rating scheme.

  • Safer workplace, better business is a simple jargon free system designed to help small businesses to comply with health and safety law.

  • We partner with local cooking enthusiasts, chefs, and educationalists to facilitate cookery workshops and demonstrations with the aim of encouraging cooking with fresh ingredients and adopting healthy food choices. We encourage families to cook together, plan and budget for their meals and to set aside 'meal dates' at least twice a week where the family can focus on 'slow food' prepared and eaten together (with the TV off). We are especially keen to see Dads develop cooking skills, where these are lacking and to get them cooking with their children. We like to do simple, the basics start with how to prepare salad and vegetable and basic knife skills.
