Local Authority Funerals
In certain limited circumstances, the Council has a responsibility to arrange the funeral of a deceased person.
Under the provisions of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984, the Council has a duty to arrange the funeral of a deceased person where there are no next-of-kin, relatives or friends to discharge this responsibility. The Council has a legal claim on the estate of a deceased person. Any assets will be used to help defray the costs incurred by the Council in arranging the funeral and discharging its legal obligations.
Please note that the Council cannot offer any financial assistance with funeral costs. If you are arranging a funeral then, depending on your relationship to the deceased, you may be eligible for financial assistance from the Social Fund. The Fund is administered by the Department for Work and Pensions. For more information, please telephone 0800 0 55 66 88 or click on link on the right.
