There is an increasing demand for green/woodland or eco-burials which Torridge District Council currently makes no provision for although it is being considered for new cemeteries.
There are a number of private green or woodland burial sites in Devon which take the form of burials or cremated remains interment in a woodland area or field, and are often associated with a newly planted tree.
Eco-burials basically take the form of burials of a sustainable nature by the use of cardboard, recycled paper or forest stewardship timber coffins or the use of natural fibre shrouds. No metals, plastics or non-biodegradable materials would be used. Graves typically would be marked by trees or flat laid natural stone markers.
