Volunteering

There are many reasons why people choose to volunteer. Here are just a few:

  • The satisfaction of doing something worthwhile in the community
  • To gain work experience
  • To meet new people
  • To feel valued
  • To build your confidence
  • To give structure to your day
  • To learn new skills or make use of the skills you already have
  • To do something completely different
  • To make your mark
  • To have fun

Although voluntary work is unpaid, it should not cost you anything to volunteer, as organisations will cover out-of-pocket expenses such as travel costs. Some organisations also offer accredited training to their volunteers, free of charge. If you are receiving state benefit such as income support or incapacity benefit, this should not normally affect your voluntary work.

However, we do advise you to keep the Benefits Agency informed about any voluntary work you undertake.
