Postal and Proxy Voting

If you are not able to vote in person at a polling station on Election Day you will need to apply for a postal or proxy vote.

How do I apply?

Postal Vote

  • To apply for a postal vote download an Application to Vote by Post [160kb] and return it to the Elections Office as indicated on the form
  • A postal vote can be sent to your home address or any other address specified by you, and be for all elections until further notice or for one off elections
  • Applications can be received at any time but at least 11 working days before the election in which you wish to vote by post
  • If you choose to vote by post you cannot go in person to the polling station to vote, but you can hand your postal vote into the polling station if you have not posted it back in time.

Proxy Vote

  • To apply for a proxy vote please download a Proxy Vote Application - website version [24kb] and return it to the Elections Office as indicated on the form
  • A proxy vote allows another person to vote on your behalf, with your permission, at your polling station
  • You need to tell your proxy who you want to vote for.

Additional Information

  • Proxy votes are usually for one off elections
  • However, if you need to apply for a permanent proxy, due to physical incapacity or because you work or study away from home, your application needs to be supported by an appropriate person

Please note that a proxy cannot vote for more than two people at any one election unless they are a close relative.

  • Applications can be received at any time but at least six working days before the election in which you wish to vote by proxy
  • If you have a medical problem  between this deadline and polling day, please contact the Elections Office as we may be able to arrange an emergency proxy for you depending on the circumstances of your situation.
