Permitting Industrial Processes

Torridge District Council is responsible for the regulation of certain industrial processes that have a potential to cause pollution.

The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 specify which industrial processes are required to hold permits.  Some permits are issued by the Council, whereas larger installations are regulated by the Environment Agency.

All permits contain conditions intended to prevent or minimise pollution.  All regulated processes are required to pay an annual fee, known as a subsistence fee which is set by the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) based on the "polluter pays" principle.

Torridge District Council regulates a variety of processes in the district which includes petrol stations, dry cleaners, animal food manufacturers and a glass manufacturer.
